With so many people out of jobs there is a lot of advice that everyone can give youngsters to differentiate themselves from everyone else as they search for a job. One of those great pieces of advice that isn’t told to them enough is to practice your interview skills every single day. Interviews are about three things. Employers learning the skills you have, watching you communicate clearly and concisely, and you selling yourself. This last one is especially important if you are planning on trying to get a job in sales. There are a number of ways to gain this skill at selling yourself, but there is no better way than to do a summer internship selling door to door like those that Southwestern Company offers.
When you are selling door to door you have to sell yourself as much as your product. Each time the door opens is another sales call where you have to present who you are, what your product is, and if you want to be successful. You can never let the rejection get to you, at least not let it affect your behavior. Because of this you have to practice selling yourself, and therefore your interview skills every day. If you are only practicing three times a day it is far too low. You should be out there getting in practice at least thirty times a day. You will learn with each mistake and you will be able to make corrections as necessary.
If you don’t have a job or an internship like Southwestern Company where you get to practice your interview skills everyday, get together with a friend and try to sell your self to each other. Talk about all of the best reasons to hire you, or to buy this product from you. Keep each mini interview at under thirty minutes. Answer questions concisely, but leaving the person understanding why they will have an advantage after hiring you. Make sure you are positive and upbeat even at the beginning before the interview really happens because nothing brings down an interview more than a bad mood. You also can’t sell anything when you are in a bad mood, not even yourself.

There are a number of reasons why you probably don’t want to do an internship. These may include:
It doesn’t pay a lot of money.
It will be menial jobs.
You have enough work with school alone.
While these are all valid points, it is still in your best interest to get an internship. There are a number of places in your area that will want an intern, and there is neither a guarantee that it will be a long list of menial jobs, neither is it a guarantee that you will get what you wanted out of it. You will have to check out each specific internship before such a thing can be determined. There are a number of good reasons why you should take an internship though.
1. Internships often turn into jobs. Southwestern company is famous for this. College students often intern with them and find themselves working full time for the company four years later. There are a number of other companies that will do that too.
2. Experience in the field of your interest. If there is a chance that you are going to get a job from them, you should choose internships that are in a field you want to go into. If you don’t end up getting the job you at least have some experience with the field now. When you apply to other companies in the field they will be more likely to pay you more because of that.
3. Some money is better than no money. While it might not be a lot of money, in college some money is usually better than no money.
4. Flexible Hours. When it comes to schedules, most internships are good at working around your schedule so that you can get the optimum amount of money and get your work done. Some internships like those at Southwestern Company , or some 9-5 companies are only during the summer, which will not cut into your school times.
5. Build your network. If you don’t get a job directly from it often you will get a job indirectly from it. Maybe one of your internship’s customer’s hires you, or a friend of the owner or manager. There are a number of ways that having a bigger network can help you.
