When I arrived in Cape Town, the first this I did was to call Cape Town Car Rentals to hire a car so I could travel freely to anywhere I wanted to go. I has an itinerary, but I also felt the need to leave it behind and just drive, maybe even get lost. I had a whole month to explore South Africa, but maybe I’d keep my itinerary in my pocket just in case.

My first stop outside of Cape Town was Somerset West then on to Sir Lowry’s Pass. I stopped the car and had a spectacular view of the Boland, along with Cape Town and Table Mountain barely visible in the horizon. I continued on through the scenic orchards from Grabouw to Villiersdorp. I spent the night there and had dinner and a most wonderful freshly baked fruit pie for dessert. The next morning I headed to Worcester, the gateway leading to the Breede River Valley. Apparently, it’s the largest fruit and wine producing area in the Western Cape. I stopped by briefly to visit a winery and tasted some very dry red wines, a semi-sweet white wine and sparkling dry wine. I also enjoyed a delightful lunch at the restaurant at the winery.

I decided at this point to not follow my itinerary and wing it, as it were. I found a nice scenic route in Robertson Valley, another wine area, then I travelled about 12 kilometers and ran into Viljoensdrif, located on the banks of the Breede River. Viljoensdrif is also know for it’s wine-making process. Going off my itinerary, I still managed to find excellent wineries. But, I did have enough wine for one day, so instead of visiting the winery I took a nice relaxing cruise on the Uncle Ben riverboat. I was pleased to see and hear an abundance of bird life, beautiful fauna and watch a few fishermen catch Bass. What was even the best part of the riverboat cruise is I could make my own picnic basket from the deli offshore and bring it on the boat. I even shared my picnic basket with several of the other tourist and had a delightful time. Hmmm, I think not following my itinerary was a good choice.

Cape Town is a well-known city in South Africa and is also one of the country’s most popular tourists centers. People from all over the world are attracted to its cultural aspects, dining and entertainment options and also its beautiful beaches. Tourists who come to explore this dynamic city are often interested in experiencing the local cuisine as part of their experience. The best Cape Town restaurants are located near some of the 5 star hotels which makes accessing them even easier, and sometimes offers the opportunity for late night after hour hunger strikes.

Catherine’s Restaurant has recently reopened and boasts a new and fashionable contemporary look for this 90 seat eatery. The interior features custom made timber based furniture with tactile fabrics. This is an extremely comfortable atmosphere to go with great food. Along with its new look, chef Garth Almazan has developed a new menu that features a lot of contemporary South African Cuisine. The restaurant will continue with its Sunday Jazz Luncheon, which offers great music along with a fabulous buffet. This is an extremely popular luncheon and the perfect end for many people’s weekends. The restaurant also has a fire place, which adds to the ambiance, and keeps people warm on cold rainy days.

Bouillabaisse Restaurant has finally opened in Cape Town. It has been known throughout South Africa and has finally arrived in this great and eagerly awaiting city. The restaurant has been extremely popular with tourists in other parts of South Africa and Cape Town is one of the country’s most popular vacation cities and Bouillabaisse hopes to generate the same kind of enthusiasm for its new location. One of the unique aspects of this restaurant is the menu structure. It is not based on the traditional appetizer, entree and side order format. The dishes are all freshly prepared in the open kitchen, and guests are allowed to order anything at anytime.

Cape Town South Africa is rich in its cultural history, geographical beauty and landscapes. The arts also play an essential aspect in the daily life of residents and serve as a major attraction for tourists. The theatre scene in Cape Town is alive and thriving with its diverse offerings suited for a variety of interests. The productions include world-class mainstream options, as well as the more edgy, experimental groups. The Theatre on the Bay is a perfect example of this. A multiple functioning facility, the theatre offers great entertainment and dinner to tourists who are staying in the best Cape Town hotels and flock to this South African institution.

Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay has its main stage theatre and also a restaurant, Act 1 Theatre Café which offers lunch and dinner options for theatre goers. And, as if the theatre couldn’t be more audience friendly, there is also a bar, Dietrich’s, to round out the evening. The productions from the 2009 season include For Generations, which is currently running, The Insatiables, Bigger Better Faster, and Travels with My Aunt, among others. For Generations, written by Kurt Egelhof, is a story of comic beauty, tragic truth and a triumphant return. It was directed by Nic Fine, who had his apprenticeship in Cape Town at The Space Theatre (now known as The People’s Space). He spent time in London before returning to South Africa.

Act 1 Theatre Café is a comfortable and informal restaurant that reminds one they are attending the theatre. There are newspaper reviews and previews positioned under the glass tabletops and production posters on the walls. The menu changes with the seasons and makes this the perfect compliment to a show and offers a full evening’s entertainment at one easy location. The theatre has an excellent subscription package which means up to a 50% savings on their productions.

This year’s Vodacom Funny Festival in Cape Town will feature stand-up comedy by Asian and English stars as well as plethora of African comedians. The five-week festival begins on June 15, 2009 and runs through July 19th at the Baxter Theatre Complex in Cape Town.

The Funny Festival is building a reputation amongst comedy festivals across Africa. The event is sure to draw comedy fans from across the country and even international visitors. There are a number of five star Cape Town hotels near the theater that cater to international guests.

Gamarjobat, an award-winning physical comedy due from Japan will make their African debut as part of the festival. Their act is a combination of mime, magic and clowning. The due will perform during the first few weeks of the festival, between June 15th and July 1st.

The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue, a hit musical team from the UK, will also perform for the first time on the continent. The London duo mimes lyrics from a whirling montage of songs. Their ridiculously literal interpretations are wildly popular wherever they perform. They will perform between July 2nd – 19th.

US magician and “mind reader” John Lenahan is also a featured international act. South African acts will include top female comedian Tumi Morake, the multilingual Nik Rabinowitz, and South African comedy heavyweight Trevor Noah. Favorite son Marc Lottering returns as the MC for the event.
