The Montreal High Lights Festival

Posted by on September 29, 2010 | No comments

It’s one of those events that has to be seen to be really appreciated. There is plenty of live music, from multiple genres, gathering in a very cultured city to perform work that makes intellectuals nod, and everyone else start to shake. There are performances by bands as well as other acts, like magicians and performers of all kinds of art, that number over 100. One can find their way here pretty easily from a Montreal hotel , and enter into landscapes where artists create new worlds for children and adults. This is one of the more concentrated efforts to put on a large-scale public art event anywhere.

The Montreal High Lights Festival also offers plenty of foods, served up by chefs from all over the world. The 2010 edition offered focuses on Portugal and New Orleans, and the culinary goodies spoke of these places, and the music also reflected the eclectic traditions from these parts of the globe. It’s held every year in February, and the underlying mission is to bring light to the darkest part of winter. Technically speaking, it’s not the darkest, but anyone who’s spent time in a chilly place understands why February can be the longest month. For this reason in particular, it’s a wonderful chance to see some stunning work, and get to know how the local community stays warm.

October brings the annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival to New Orleans. The 2010 event will be held October 16th & 17th at Lafayette Square Park. This free festival is organized by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and claims to showcase the best barbecue in the South along with two stages of great music and a crafts fair.

Blues & BBQ is one of several festivals sponsored by the Jazz & Heritage Foundation, which also produces the annual New Orleans Jazz Fest every Spring. The Foundation produces several jazz and gospel concerts throughout the year as well as hosting lectures and literary events. In 2008 the Foundation opened the Jazz & Heritage Center and maintains the Jazz & Heritage Archive.

This year’s Blues & BBQ featured performers include Taj Mahal, Ruthie Foster, Li’l Ed & the Blues Imperials, Barbara Lynn, Corey Harris and Henry Gray. The event will feature an Oral History Stage, the crowd-pleasing Voodoo Blues Challenge, and a new Sports Bar area as well as a variety of craft and food vendors.

The Tool Evolves, iPad Applications and a Perfect Present

Posted by on September 23, 2010 | No comments

The history of tools is one that continues to develop, both backwards and forwards in time. It might seem like a contradiction to see the past evolving, but a recent discovery in Ethiopia adds another million years to the invention of tools. A bone that is over 3 million years old was found, with chips on it that suggest it was cut with sharp stones. That’s more than enough to fit the definition of a tool, which is really just an extension of the human hand.

Since the hand is responding to impulses that begin in the brain, than there are many other things that could fall into the same category, not the least of which is the control pad for video games. This does shift things in a new direction, because it sets the origins back a lot further than once imagined, but also highlights the present moment as place where tools are undergoing some radical changes.

Today, one could conceivably develop the idea for a new app, contact an ipad application developer and ask for help with moving it forward, and have the new invention on the market in just a few weeks. In the mobius strip of history, then, this moment folds back on the first moment, but their individual complexities are always revealing that there is more to these things than anyone could have imagined.

Pennsylvania Loans in Difficult Times

Posted by on September 19, 2010 | No comments

Mortgages have been a rather confounding object for a number of years. Perhaps the confusion began with the very first mortgage. That’s something that no one’s able to really pinpoint. The origins of contemporary mortgages have their recent roots in the 70s, although these came from developments in real estate that were adopted in England in the 1920s. Technically speaking, then, the mortgage is a recent thing, unless one considers other kinds of loans.

In that regard, the first mortgage would have been from a few hundred years ago, and perhaps more. When a land deal was arranged, where the purchaser was borrowing against projected profits, the idea of contemporary mortgages was actually born. So if there is any trend discernible in looking at the development of mortgages, it’s clear that they have only become more complicated over time.

Although those going through Pennsylvania loan officer training won’t have to understand the history, there’s plenty in the present to consider, because this is a very complex time. The recent fluctuations in the market make it a very interesting field, and it can also be a lucrative one. One of the most exciting things, however, in contemporary mortgage practice is the sheer amount of new programs for helping people to keep their homes, as well as help those to acquire new properties that have been victims of the times. It’s an open field, and there is so much to learn.

Types of Insurance for Traveling

Posted by on September 17, 2010 | No comments

Before traveling outside of their own country larger numbers of people are beginning to wonder if they should take out a health insurance policy for their trip. And while this is an excellent question, it really only has one answer. Yes, you should definitely look into getting a health insurance policy for your travels. It is a common mistaken belief that people only need to have insurance if they are going to be gone for extended periods of time. And while it is absolutely essential that you have insurance in those situations, it is also important to access a visitor insurance policy when you are going on vacation.

Of course there are various considerations, and mitigating factors and if you live in the United States, are extremely healthy and are simply crossing the border into Canada for an afternoon picnic, you may not want to go to the trouble acquiring insurance, unless there’s mayonnaise on the sandwich you’re eating and it’s been in your backpack since yesterday. However, if you plan to go on an extended trip, for any reason, then you will definitely want to look into the various policies that are available for you. Generally, you can get a policy that is specific to the needs of extended work related travel, traveling for study or even vacations. And if you’re heading to Africa to climb Mount Kilimanjaro there is even a policy for you.

Freedom in a Wheelchair

Posted by on September 15, 2010 | No comments

It’s one of the great challenges in a life to have to learn how to work with a situation that’s not perfect. It can be especially difficult when circumstances make it more of a challenge than others seem to have, and it’s hard to not take things personally. At first, anyway. Most people who get around in a wheelchair have had to go through a stage of taking things personally, because it’s just part of the ride.

After that, however, things start to shift in radical directions, and for everyone, there is an after. Nancy Mairs, in writing about her own struggles with chronic illness in books like Remembering the Bone House , is one of the more articulate writers in tracking the inner journey that happens to everyone who finds themselves dealing with more than they’d counted on from the world.

Those who come through the struggles with a sense of wholeness do seem to have an edge over everyone else. Particularly over those who have never had to face any kind of adversity. In most of the world’s spiritual traditions, there are nuggets of wisdom to be found about the nature of suffering. They all seem to agree that at some point there is a chance to start seeing the world from a different point of view. The ability to shift perspective is the most freeing thing a human being can do, because it amounts to the ability to be free at the core, and that’s something that can’t always be learned by walking.

The Advantages of LED Christmas Lights

Posted by on September 6, 2010 | No comments

It doesn’t feel like Christmas without the holiday lights. They are placed in Christmas trees, the outside of homes and in the yards. Some are more modest, like white lights and some are abundantly over the top like place in every available spot outside the house. Some Christmas lights blink or some are set to music, whatever the Christmas tradition, LED lights have become a part of the celebration.

Nowadays, the light trend is using the Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights for all Christmas lighting needs. They come in all colors besides just white LED Christmas lights and they use considerably less energy, last longer and are harder to break than the incandescent light strings still available on the market. There is one downside to an LED strand of lights, if one light goes, the whole string goes, but they are so inexpensive to replace that more and more people are catching on to the advantages of using LED Christmas lights over any other type.

An advantage of using white LED Christmas lights is they cast a more natural and softer light, so having a gentle glow of lights on the Christmas tree helps create that Christmas warmth inside when there’s a blizzard blowing outside. Another advantage to using white LED Christmas lights is they can be used for any special event, not just Christmas. For instance, placing origami boxes over the lamps and stringing them across the back patio makes a great ambiance for all to enjoy.

US Open Tennis 2010 Scores big in Style

Posted by on September 4, 2010 | No comments

US Open Tennis scores with Maria Sharapova’s deep purple dress for her night matches and her familiar Nike Striking Court Day Dress from Nike’s Striking Clothing Collection. Maria is now well prepared to not only dazzle the crowds with championship tennis playing, but with her stylish look on the court.

The deep purple dress is not the same as her day tennis dress. The design may seem similar in style with the sleeveless upper part and collar, but the buttons are gone. At the US Open, with dresses one can never go wrong. However, Sharapova’s night dress is nicer and more elegant, plus it follows the shape of her body better.

Nike is not only dressing Maria, but Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and new comer Li Na as well. The Nike Tennis Capsule Collection was created specifically for the US Open Tennis 2010. Nike took an extra step in creating a 2nd set of performance apparel for each player since there are so many dramatic moments that take place during the night games.

Nike adaptive designs will maximize the player’s performance and will keep at bay unpredictable temperature changes. In addition, with the quick transitions between participating in a court play and a court side audience, each piece of clothing was made to give a causal, relaxed look and feel.

The US Open Tennis 2010 Collection from Nike will be available in interval beginning this week at all Nike retail locations.
