Portland’s Sculpture Garden at Grant Park is a Children’s Paradise

Posted by on July 27, 2010

At Portland’s Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden in Grant Park’s north end are three life-sized bronze statues, celebrating all the character’s from author Cleary’s beloved Ramona Quimby series of children’s books. The writer/illustrator grew up in this neighborhood, and Grank Park is where her stories take place, located at Northeast 33rd Avenue and Brazee Street.

There is a statue of mischievous Ramona in her raingear, the tall and serious Henry Huggins, and Henry’s playful dog Ribsy. The characters stand around a central fountain, which is perfect for children to splash in during warm weather. Around the water fountain slab are granite plaques engraved with the titles of the Cleary books that take place in Portland, including all the Henry Huggins books, Ribsy, Otis Spofford and all the books involving Ramona and her older sister Beezus.

The Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden is a great place to visit if you’re from out of town and staying at any of the Portland boutique hotels and have grown up on Cleary’s books or if your children are currently reading the books; they’ll love visiting the park and the neighborhoods around Grant Park where all the characters hang out and they’ll enjoy the bronze statues becoming sprayers during the summer months. If you’re children aren’t familiar with the series, this is a perfect opportunity to check the books out from the local library nearby, have your hotel pack you a picnic lunch and head off to the Sculpture Garden and read to you children
